The Tree You Lit (Remixed & Remastered)

A 1 track singer-songwriter single (4m 20s) — released December 18th 2020 on Son Canciones

A Singer of Songs is the alter ego of Lieven Scheerlinck, a Belgian who has been living in Barcelona for more than 20 years. Since 2008 he has released 6 studio albums and two collaborative EP's with Tiny Ruins and Withered Hand. His songs have been compared by the press to Sparklehorse, Low, Vic Chesnutt and snowflakes falling in slow motion. He is the co-founder of the record label Son Canciones and curator of the concert series Indies Keeping Secrets (Barcelona-Brussels) and FemPop (The Festival That Does Not Want to Exist). He has produced recordings of artists of the likes of Haley Heynderickx, Max García Conover, Katy Kirby, Karima Walker and more.

"The Tree You Lit" was written in 2010. Lieven was felling pretty miserable and Christmas felt like just another huge mountain to climb. So when he was asked to come up with a Christmas tune, nothing jolly could be expected. But somehow there is light in the middle of all the darkness. A big tree lit by others casts the perfect shade to rest in.

The track was home recorded in 2010 by Lieven, minutes after he wrote it. All instruments are played by him, using first takes only. The recording has been remixed in 2020 by Lieven himself and Alain Quateau remastered it.

“Lo-fi lullaby folk that falls on the ears as gently as snowflakes.” - Metro UK

“A deep whisper of Barzin and Damien Jurado, a dusty atmosphere which seems to refer to a Conor Oberst stripped of emphasis.” - Onda Rock

“Like a warm blanket you want to put over you after a bad day. It’s haunting and sweet but there is a tinge of despair laced within it. - LAisthenewNY.com

“Beautiful music with a huge beating heart. (...) The singer of these songs easily recalls the melancholy style of late singers St Thomas or Vic Chesnutt.” - Odd Box
